Design proposal. The clients, a young couple with two children, have asked to provide ideas for the partial interior renovation on two floors of their brownstone. The design exploration first agreed upon, regarded the relocation of the kitchen space from the central area of the main floor to the garden side of the basement. The location of the existing space of the living room was confirmed but modified. A family space was designated in the central area with a dining space toward the front of the building. The whole sequence of interior areas achieved a sense of openness, with an open shelf library acting as the sole divider. A new side thread cantilevered staircase was allocated along one side of the living room to reach the basement level and a full height glass panel acted as its parapet. The existing floor construction along the rear wall, was shortened by three feet to allow more light to reach the interior of the new kitchen area on the basement level. The rear masonry wall of the house was also cut wide open, on both levels, to allow more light to inundate the interior of the building and to expose in plain view the garden area. An alternate type of intervention, more limited in scope, was subsequently studied and is also represented here. This latter idea was the final choice of the clients.
